2010 Nebraska Angus Tour
Sandhills Area Members Host 2010 Tour
Nebraska Angus Association members residing the Nebraska Sandhills Area served as hosts for the 2010 Nebraska Angus Tour on Sept. 11th. The one day event attracted over 100 tour goers from 4 different states. The tour headquarters was located in Broken Bow, Nebraska.
The tour hosted an evening social at the Broken Bow Fairgrounds on the evening of Sept. 10th. Approximately 40 people enjoyed an evening of hors d'oeuvres and beverages at the Paddock on the Custer County Fairgrounds. Tour activities began on Saturday morning with a continental breakfast served at the Chuck wagon on the Custer County Fairgrounds and the Herd Bull Alley. Nebraska members who exhibited at the Herd Bull Alley were Rocking Ford Angus and Treffer Angus.
Upon leaving the Custer County Fairgrounds, the tour entourage headed north to Summitcrest Angus. Here the Jeff Johnson family greeted tour goers to their operation and their cattle on display. From Summitcrest Angus the tour group headed toward Sargent and a lunch stop at Slagle Angus.
Mark, Kristin, Melvin and Jenny Slagle welcomed the tour to their lunch stop. Certified Angus Beef/Sysco Lincoln, Inc. provided the pre-cooked brisket beef product for the lunch. The Slagle family had pens of their Angus seedstock on display that ranged from weaned bull calves, heifer calves and also some of their donor females.
From Slagle Angus the tour drove toward the heart of the Nebraska Sandhills region and a stop at Minert-Simonson Angus near Dunning. Here Lowell and Carroll Minert and J.W. and Cindy Simonson and their crew welcomed the tour group to their cattle on display which included some of their leading herd sires and their offspring.
Dailey Angus at Thedford along State Highway 2 was the next stop on the tour. Here Lemoyne, Rhonda and Matthew Dailey welcomed the group to their unique pasture stop. Lemoyne and his family proudly displayed their unique breeding program that raises Angus cattle on the native Sandhills grasses, utilizing the forage available with little supplementation and managing the grazing cycles during the year.
From Dailey Angus, the group headed west on State Highway 2 toward Mullen and the grand finale of the 2010 tour hosted by Kraye Angus. Here John, Julie, David and the Kraye family welcomed the tour goers to their brand of Sandhills hospitality for the evening meal stop. The Krayes had cow/calf heifer pairs on display, their weaned bull calves and a group of bred heifers available for viewing. The winner of the donated C.J. Brown print "Master of the Plains" was given away. The winner of the print had to be present to win. This year's fortunate tour goer taking home the print was Gladys Hoffmeister of Imperial, NE.
