2009 Nebraska Angus Tour

Heartland Angus Producers Host 2009 Tour

Nineteen Nebraska Angus Association members served as hosts for the 2009 Nebraska Angus Tour held in the Heartland of Nebraska, September 18-19. The two day event drew nearly 200 tour goers from eight different states. Kearney was the headquarters for this year’s event.

John Angus, near Miller, Nebraska served as breakfast hosts for the first stop on Friday. Melvin and Beulah, Dan & Pam John and families welcomed the bus load and several car loads of tour goers, and treated the group to beef sausage breakfast burritos. Rocking Ford Angus from nearby Eddyville, also displayed their breeding program at this stop.

Isaacs Cattle Co. of Callaway welcomed the group to the second stop. Nick & Elaine were gracious hosts as tour goers viewed their breeding program on display. The Isaacs answered questions about their upcoming dispersal and highlighted outstanding lots for their October sale.

Jorgenson Farms, owned by Neil & Suzy Jorgenson, greeted their tour guests at the third stop of the day which was located at the Woodward Soddy, north of Callaway. Here the Jorgenson’s cattle were displayed at a unique location in Custer County. Tour goers were amazed at the historical buildings that are currently being refurbished and preserved by the Woodward Family. Tour goers were amazed by the workmanship that went into construction of the sod house and barn, the antiques stored in the barn and the scenic views at the Jorgenson Farm stop.

The tour goers loaded the bus and headed for Sand Dune Cattle Co. and their lunch stop near Westerville. Scott & Jennifer Svoboda met the group at the sale barn where their annual bull sale is held. At this stop, Jim Shirley, recently retired from the American Angus Association was recognized for his contributions to the success of Nebraska Angus breeders in recent years. Jim served as Regional Manager for Nebraska for many years. The Svoboda’s treated their guests to a lunch of beef kabobs, the meat courtesy of Cargill Meat Solutions from Nebraska City. After the lunch, visitors had a chance to view the Sand Dune breeding program and some of the females that were offered for sale in late October.

Matt Printz, current Nebraska Regional Manager led the tour bus to the next stop at Ostrand Angus south of Mason City. Neil and Kory Ostrand and their families served as hosts for this stop and described their herd and breeding program. A highlight held at this stop was the contest to guess the weight of a cow/calf pair. Elanco® furnished two 5 liter bottles of pour on to the winner of this contest.

From Ostrand Angus, the tour wound through the hills southeast of Mason City to the Rohde Feeders stop. Here Mick Phillips, manager of the Nebraska Bull Test, shared a history of the Bull Test in Nebraska and how breeders could enter their bulls on this year’s test. Jim Boyles of Boyles Angus shared with the group the history of Boyles Angus herd and the cattle that were on display. Shane Rohde described the distillers silage he produced this year, which will be used as a portion of the ration that will be fed to bulls on the test. Shane stated that he would like to increase the number of bulls on the test this year as well as the number of breeds involved for the test.

From Rohde Feeders, the tour caravan headed east down Highway 2 towards Ravenna. The bus and car loads of tour goers stopped at the Ravenna recreation area. The tour crowd was met by the representative from Abengoa Energy, better known as the Ravenna ethanol plant. While the bus load of travelers went to the Ethanol plant, the remaining people were treated to a presentation on Ravenna history by Ravenna Historical Society and also a presentation by the Ravenna Chamber of Commerce. When the bus returned, the two groups swapped places and the information on the ethanol plant, Ravenna history and Chamber, was repeated.

From Ravenna, the group headed southwest of Ravenna for the final stop of the day at Dethlefs Angus Ranch. Their Dutch and Marian Dethlefs and their families served as hosts for the Certified Angus Beef steak supper. The group, had time to relax, enjoy musical entertainment and look at the Dethlefs Angus Ranch cattle that were on display.

Day two was packed with interesting stops and travel time. Carl Dethlefs and Sons Angus served as hosts for the first stop of the day. Jerry & Dianna Dethlefs and their families received tour goers at their home and sale facility near Rockville. On display were some cow/calf pairs and some of the coming two year old bulls that will be offered in their March, 2010 production sale. Door prizes were awarded prior to departure for the next stop.

Upon leaving the Dethlefs Ranch, the group headed towards Scotia and the Poss Angus pasture stop hosted by Danny and Kristy Poss and their family. Tour goers were able to participate in a contest to determine the $EN value of one of the Poss Angus cows on display. At stake were two $125 vouchers from Semex, for the bull Wall Street.

From the Poss Angus pasture stop, the tour left the hard grass and corn country and headed towards Bartlett and the eastern edge of the Nebraska Sandhills area. Wagonhammer Ranch served as the dinner stop hosts for tour goers. Jay Wolf welcomed the group to the Wagonhammer Ranch lunch stop and proudly requested that the group return in 2010 for the ranches 100th anniversary. Derner Angus Ranch, Dennis and Justin Derner and their family also had cattle on display. They invited tour goers back for the Derner Angus production sale in April, 2010.

From Wagonhammer Ranch, the tour headed towards Pelster Bros. Angus, just Southeast of Wagonhammer. Here Ken Pelster, his brothers David & Danny, and the family welcomed the group to the commercial cattle stop on this year’s tour. Ken mentioned that the commercial cattle on display represented a total of 2300-2400 commercial Angus females owned by the Pelster Bros. Angus, Bob & Wes Pelster and Chris Baum ranch. RRAM Livestock owned by Ryan Reestman and Martin Thorberg displayed their registered Angus breeding program at this stop. RRAM markets their breeding stock by private treaty but an annual production sale is a future goal.

Upon leaving the Pelster Ranch, the tour headed back South towards Palmer and the final stop of the tour, Lazy Black Diamond Ranch. Here the Loy Glause family served as hosts for the grand finale of the tour. Kevin Glause introduced his family members and described their breeding and marketing program. At this stop several door prizes were given away, including the donated C.J. Brown print. The winner of the print had to be present to win. This year’s fortunate tour goer taking home the print was Ashley Wagner of Genoa, Nebraska.
